A musical awakening

The musical Spring Awakening, which explores themes of sexual awakening and rebellion in the teenage years, will show as part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival.

The original play was banned in Germany in 1892 because of its frank depiction of sexual discovery, homosexuality, abortion and suicide. Cast member Michael Ford said the issues the musical covers around mental health and sexuality are still relevant today.

“I think it’s a show that every same-sex attracted young person should see,” Ford said. The show runs September 30 – October 8 at the Alexander Theatre, Monash University, Clayton. Tickets: $32 full, $24 concession.
