A period piece

A period piece

Australian Ballet principal artist Adam Bull has taken on a role in a sweeping tale of love and temptation.

Bull is starring in Manon at the Sydney Opera House. Based on the classic novel by Abbe Prevost, English choreographer Sir Kenneth MacMillan has transformed the story into an ingenious piece of dance.

This ballet has such emotional depth. It’s a tragic tale of love, greed, passion and heartbreaking betrayal, Bull told Sydney Star Observer.

As a dancer it’s so great to have roles which are so meaty, you lose yourself in the story. You forget all those endless hours training and perfecting the steps and just let yourself go on an amazing emotional journey and bring the audience along with you.

The period piece is built around communicative and fulfilling pas de deux, tracing the attraction between the young Manon and des Grieux.

All the great dancers of our era have performed the title roles of Manon and Des Grieux. People love to be to be taken a journey and this ballet certainly does that, Bull said.

It is a very sumptuous and sexy ballet and at times quite confronting. But it has also some of the most beautiful pas de deux, I think, ever created and is an absolute joy to dance. The ballet has such realism you leave feeling it, not just having seen it.

The show opened on Friday 28 November.

info: Manon continues until Wednesday 17 December. Tickets start at $30. Book on 9250 7777 or www.sydneyoperahouse.com.
