A place where you stand out to fit in

There’s seemingly no end to the festive party offerings in the coming weeks; Melbourne is set to sizzle with queer club nights even if the weather isn’t quite there yet. Among them is the second provocative offering from the Home Video crew.

Home Video #2 XXXmas comes complete with plenty of ‘naughty or nice’ adianoeta and a desire by organisers to return to the queer party days of old.

“We pay homage to the clubs we knew and loved before there was an exclamation mark in Melbourne party nights,” Home Video co-coordinator Joel explained.

“Like Tasty, 44, Freakazoid and Witness Protection Program Social Club – at these places it’s the people who stand out that fit in.”

A tongue-in-cheek sexploration of the ‘adult’ lifestyle, the first Home Video party at The Johnston in October well and truly delivered on promises to push the boundaries of good taste with its posthoumus shrine to notorious Melbourne swinger Herman Rockefeller.

“The Johnston is a great party space. They’ve spent a fortune on state of the art sound systems and two large spaces. It’s hard to believe it was the Centrelink office,” Joel said.

Their second attempt will return to the venue and see revellers sharing the dance floor with wayward elves, sexy santas and randy reindeer, with special guest DJ Arlen Da Silva (infamous for Freakazoid) as well as DJ Kitty and Rev Thorn.

In appealing to gay party-goers, Joel said his approach was simple.

“Home Video is entirely and unashamedly homophobic ­— homogeneity-phobic, that is. These days, queer spots seem to have adopted a kind of uni-dimensionality. It’s all men only; women only; bears only; twinks only; underwear only. And now it’s embarrassing not to be asked for proof of age,” he said.

“It’s a place where Melbourne’s hipsters can forget about their postgraduate degrees and upcoming art exhibitions and let their tawdry fantasies run wild.

“And while there’s definitely a homo bent to Home Video, it is ‘straight friendly’ and a little bit older also.”
