Aliens coming in search of sperm

A warning alert for all sci-fi fans and show queens: sexy alien invaders are set to arrive from outer space this month to manipulate the desires of two arch-enemy science fiction authors in an attempt to obliterate earth.

Well, maybe not literally, but it’s all happening in Risky Lunar Love. The musical comedy with an extraterrestrial plot is ready to rock’n’roll into CarriageWorks Bay 20 Theatre for a limited season.

The story is about the threat to the planet at the hands of a school of sexy female alien invaders who seek a suitable male donor to seed with, actor Douglas Hansell said.

Their intention is to colonise a new planet and, having gotten what they came for, to destroy the earth on their way out.

The production itself is about telling an entertaining story and getting the ball rolling on a show that is irreverent, funny, original and definitely has a future.

What I like about the story is that the baddies win so there’s an ambiguity in the narrative that clashes with our sense of closure but, at the end of the day, if the world is going to shit you may as well go out partying.

Hansell said the set design looks a bit like Survivor meets Stanley Kubrick meets Mars Attacks! -” very kooky indeed.

Despite the celestial storyline, big names behind the scenes in this production are setting the benchmark with Machine Guns Fellatio’s Ross Johnston as musical director, choreographer John O’Connell and young director John Sheedy.

With 18 musical numbers and a six-piece band it’s going to be a production full of showstoppers.

It appeals to our taboos and you laugh right from your gut. It’s a night at the theatre that only demands your complicity and willingness to enjoy it, Hansell said.

I love theatre that challenges your biases and your emotional vantage point, but to offset those experiences you need to go into the theatre sometimes knowing that it’s okay to relax and allow yourself to be entertained -” and maybe offended.
