An angel in Godskitchen

John O’Bir is no dummy when it comes to producing dance music. His life turned around when he took out the prestigious Passion and M8 magazine competition six years ago.

Now a resident DJ for Godskitchen, he warms up the dancefloor for the likes of Tiesto and Paul van Dyk. With a DJ style that’s energetic and uplifting, he’s going to offer one incredible set at this years Godskitchen Angels in White party on Saturday 11 October at The Dome.

O’Bir’s initial endeavours include collaboration on the first single Promise I Made produced with Airwave securing his position on the dance single circuit.

With the wisdom gained from the release, he went into the recording studio to produce his first solo endeavours, resulting in the popular tunes Effectual and Ascendancy.

For me a good dancefloor song needs, firstly, strong production. I’ve always been a fan of big strings and tracks like these will always make a -˜good dancefloor’ as you will see the smiles come out, O’Bir told Sydney Star Observer.

I think a certain amount of vocal will always create a good atmosphere on the dancefloor.

I don’t think there are too many secrets when it comes to remixing. Some tips I can give are: be sure you like the track you are remixing, or at least like certain parts of the track, and always try to create something that’s very different from the original but still within your sound.

So if you like a track that’s very much your sound, try and stay clear, as I’ve found in the past you just end up creating the original with little change.

It’s been an impressive journey for a man who is yet to chalk up 25 years on this earth. Despite touring the world with his travelling party residency, he is also a label manager of Conspiracy Recording. This year also saw his album From Within signed to Paul van Dyk’s huge record label Vandit.

With his DJ set expected to make a lasting impression on clubbers next month, what can we expect to hear and how does he know what Australians like?

I’ve found that in most places I play, the crowd is very educated and I can get away with playing the tunes I love. But in some places where dancefloors are not so educated, it requires a bit of thought and a play around with the old -˜classic’ stuff or even dipping into slightly different genres, O’Bir said.

I learnt to read a crowd in my years as resident of Godskitchen, where I would play at all times of the night. I think to be a good dancefloor reader, you need a decent amount of club play.

Expect to hear the best in trance music and you will see a DJ who loves what he does and plays with a smile on his face. You will be hearing a number of my album tracks as well as the freshest trance around at this time.
