Cabaret duo promise strong show

Life is a cabaret show for musical duo Michael Emmett and Michael Coombes. The two have been inseparable since meeting at Palms nightclub nine years ago.

The pair are set to soar at Bar Me on Monday 11 and Tuesday 12 May with a show infused with comedy, theatre and great musical arrangements. Emmett said thanks to their annual seasons at the Bounty (a theatre restaurant on the south coast), they have been able to develop a show with a strong repertoire.

The audience will be taken on a musical journey where the songs are connected with a sense of flow and purpose, he said.

It’s not a gimmicky theme show which can often have a small life span and only appeal to a smaller audience, but rather, the show is about the songs and the way they are put together.

When Emmett isn’t dressing up as Dane Edna, he’s incorporating various musical genres into the show with Coombes. The pair pride themselves on their show’s ability to embrace a wide audience regardless of age or sexuality.

We want our shows to be meaningful to the audience, allowing them to escape for about 90 minutes -” plus we always explore new material to keep our minds and the show fresh, Emmett said.

People will discover during the show that our personalities are very different. I’ll play the more serious role while Coombes can be a cheeky bugger. People have often compared our on-stage relationship as having the Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis influence -” this isn’t deliberate, it has just evolved that way.
