Calling all angels

Calling all angels

A new Sydney-based performance project called Peace Angels: Walking Light will be held at Hyde Park on September 25.

‘Angels’ — figures dressed entirely in white — will appear in Sydney’s CBD and the area surrounding Hyde Park in malls, restaurants, among street vendors and on buses during the afternoon.

They will then move through city, joining with other angels until they converge at Hyde Park, near the ANZAC Memorial, from 6.45pm. Fire, lighting and music will transform the memorial pool into a glowing pool of reflection. The audience will be invited to place candles of hope in the pool and think peace and love during the performance.

“The performance, at its core, is celebrating the peace, harmony and acceptance that we often take for granted but also need to strongly protect,” event co-organiser (and Sydney Convicts rugby team member) Erik Denison said.

“In the gay community, in particular, we forget how far we’ve come in the area of peace and in large part that is due to the many angels who have come before us, who helped to build a world where homophobia is nowhere near what it used to be.

“This performance is about celebrating all forms of angels in our world that have helped to make it more peaceful. Obviously our aim is to entertain, but we also want to transform and inspire the audience and this amazing city.”

The free performance event is supported by numerous organisations, including the Ministry for Peace and Shanti Mission, a multi-faith spiritual community dedicated to promoting peace. As well as attracting people of different faiths and beliefs, organisers said they were anticipating a high gay and lesbian turnout, thanks to the event’s message of peace and acceptance.
