A troupe of colourful cabaret, burlesque, circus and contemporary vaudeville performers will be flying in from Europe to treat Sydney Festivalgoers to a sexy, humorous and dangerous knick-knack of a show called La Clique.

Many of the La Clique performers are drawn from the fringes of society and in their individual way they will endear themselves to you, said creative producer Brett Haylock.

You are certainly not bashed around the head with a moral or message but when you disappear into the night at the conclusion of the show one would hope that your heart has been warmed.

The cast prides themselves on pure escapism. So, leave reality at the front door of The Famous Spiegeltent and allow each performer to transport you to another world inhabited by the likes of a blue lycra-clad bunny and an eight foot high dancing puppet diva.

It’s an old-fashioned variety show on acid. The format is age-old but La Clique made it relevant to an entirely new generation. The intimacy of the setting in which it plays is a big part of its appeal with the audience immersed in the action, Haylock said.

La Clique has captured the imagination of audiences all around the world. Real, one-of-a-kind performers doing extraordinary things that need to be seen to be believed. In an age of faceless, corporate mass-produced entertainment, critics and, most importantly, audiences have considered La Clique a breath of fresh air.

info: La Clique will play as part of the Sydney Festival from Tuesday 6 January until Sunday 1 February. Tickets start from $65. Bookings on 1300 888 412 or visit sydneyfestival.org.au
