Embracing life after Ellen

Embracing life after Ellen

Comedian Lea DeLaria is flying in to the Sydney Opera House to reveal the ins and outs of the life of a big hairy dyke.

My show really isn’t about anything and it concerns itself with observations on the absurdities of the human condition, she said.

If anything it is a slice of life from an individual travelling from point A to point B while being a big hairy dyke in the post-Ellen modern world.

DeLaria’s style of comedy is hilariously loud and cleverly improvised. Her new show, NAKED…. An Acoustic Look at the Life of a Big Hairy Dyke, unites her in-your-face stand-up, queer ethics, backstage stories and music from her soon-to-be-released album The Live Smoke Sessions.

I am a stand-up comic and a jazz singer who happens to be queer. If there is an underlying message in my show it has to do with me getting laid, she said.

Now jazz is improvisation, and I am what you might call a very straight-ahead hardcore bebop singer -” I find the blend in an almost Karma Sutra-like fashion.

I just try to break the societal concept which says ladies should not spit or holler or use foul language or have sex for that matter. My job as I see it is to put the sex back in homosexuality. I try to do just that at every city in which I perform.

info: Lea DeLaria’s NAKED plays from Saturday 8 to Thursday 13 November, 7.30pm at the Sydney Opera House. For bookings call 9250 7777 or online at sydneyoperahouse.com.
