The drum group Samba Blistas will lead a parade from the Winsome Hotel, Lismore, with a 24-metre rainbow flag, to the Star Court Theatre to celebrate opening night of the 2010 Queer Fruits Film Festival on December 29.

The procession will be officially welcomed by Lismore Mayor Jenny Dowell and opening night hostess Vanessa Wagner.

Now in its second year, the Queer Fruits Film Festival will screen a program of international GLBTIQ films on December 29 and 30, with support from Tropical Fruits Inc, Arts NSW and Lismore City Council. 26 films are on offer this year, including two features and 21 world and/or Australian premieres.

Among them are tales of closeted gay vampires (I Suck), shoplifting smalltown transvestites (Love and Other Red Spot Specials) and the Australian premiere of the 2010 US feature Flow Affair, by Wolfgang Busch.

Busch’s documentary tracks the roots of the flag, fan and floguing dance subculture in New York City, a gay Greenwich Village dance tradition that originated in the leather bars of the late ‘70’s.
