Lisa finds a folksy feel

It seems that former Australian Idol contestant Lisa Mitchell is fast finding her feet in the music business.

The folk-inspired and softly spoken songbird has whistled her way into a Warner Music recording contract and hopes to conquer the airwaves with her new single Neapolitan Dreams.

Mitchell’s approach to music is smart for a 16-year-old who draws inspiration from journal writing, reading classics and bopping along to the likes of Cat Stevens and Bob Dylan.

At the beginning of the year Mitchell travelled to London to work with the production team behind Sia, K T Tunstall, Amy Winehouse and Jason Mraz.

I wrote half of the songs on the album and the others were co-written, Mitchell told Sydney Star Observer.

The songwriting has evolved a lot more. The last EP has been more guitar-based. I play keyboards a little on this album -” I’m really shit at the piano but it’s more like I use the piano, rather than play it really well, to get the spirit of the song across.

My songs have to make sense from beginning to end and have a good concept. I find co-writing very hard unless you come into the room with an idea you have developed by yourself.

The singer is set to hit the stage as support act for The Panics on Friday 14 November at the Metro and then at Melbourne’s Billboard Nightclub on Friday 21 November.
