Loose Ends back in business

Loose Ends back in business
Matt-Vaughan-cover
Loose Ends gets back to weekly business for summer starting from Sunday December 1.
Resident DJ Matt Vaughan will be joined a bunch of guests each and every Sunday at the Phoenix Bar – expect underground sounds, queer performers, cheap drinks and a mixed crowd from 10pm to late. We caught up with Vaughan to find out what’s in store for this Sunday night institution.
Q. Loose Ends has just celebrated it’s 7th birthday. Why do you think the night has enjoyed such longevity?
A. I never thought the night would still be running seven years on but there is undeniably something special about Loose Ends. The diversity and open-mindedness of the crowd has a lot to do with it I think. The thing which probably unifies the Loose Ends crowd is the desire for something different in the queer club/bar scene.
When I started Loose Ends seven years ago it was as a reaction against all of the cookie-cutter Oxford St bars and parties playing commercial, predictable ‘gay’ music and attracting crowds that were themselves pretty generic looking and behaving – to me, anyway. Seven years later and I don’t think much has changed in that way and Loose Ends still occupies a rare place in Sydney’s gay scene.
I met a guy who had just moved to Sydney from Europe at the last Loose Ends party who literally said “thank God I found this!”
Loose Ends is also one of the only gay nights left at The Phoenix that harks back to the days when that venue was a bastion of underground queer clubbing from basically Thursday to Monday, and I think a lot of people cherish that. I certainly do.
Q. What do you enjoy most about putting Loose Ends on?
A. Apart from all of the great music I get to play and get exposed to, the best thing for me is the opportunity to meet so many great people. I have made so many amazing friends over the years and each season of Loose Ends brings more.
That’s a gift! And also having watched so many connections being made between other people over the years is an amazing thing.
Q. What can we expect from Loose Ends over the summer?
A. More music, more dancing, more romances… Lots of great guest DJ’s and performers.
Also, super savvy performer/artist/activist/academic/DJ Regrette Etcetera will be doing a monthly residency/takeover at Loose Ends over summer which is going to be something else! People should join the Loose Ends Facebook group to keep in the loop.
Q. What are your 5 favourite tracks at the moment?
A. Lose My Head (Jimmy Edgar Remix) – Body Language
Naive Response – Daniel Avery
Feel Real (Shadow Child Remix) – Movement
The Game – Lars Vegas
Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone – The Manhattan Transfer
