WE Belong Together chanteuse Mariah Carey has redefined the LGBTQ acronym while accepting the ‘ally’ award at the GLAAD Media Awards.

When Carey took to the stage to accept the award from her best friend Lee Daniels, who directed her in the Oscar-winning film Precious, she admitted that she was nervous.

“I was a little nervous about tonight cause I thought I had to learn a whole new alphabet,” she said.

“I was like ‘man, I don’t wanna do it wrong’ then I decided if I have to memorise it, I might as well elaborate on it…

“So we have l (for) legendary, g (for) gorgeous, b (for) beautiful – all of you beautiful people – t (for) tantalising, and even q for quality.”

Carey then went on to thank the audience and the LGBT community for their “unconditional love”.

“I haven’t experienced much of it, so I thank you – I wish all of you love, peace and harmony and as my five year old son Rocky likes to say, boobies and butts,” she said with a laugh.

While introducing Carey, Daniels spoke about their decades-long friendship and the positive role she has played in his life.

“It’s because of her belief in me, and her telling me things I didn’t know about myself… but because who was I but a faggot that my father told me that I was? But she told me that I wasn’t that,” Daniels said.

“Mariah is one of us. I know many celebrities that pretend to be one of us – this bitch is one of us. To the marrow, bone.”
