Olympic champion Matthew Mitcham is celebrating his Beijing triumph with an appearance on the cover of the new issue of DNA magazine, out this week.

Mitcham has become a gay sporting icon since his history-making gold medal win in the men’s 10-metre platform dive, beating favourite Zhou Luxin with the highest-scoring dive in Olympic history. It was the first gold medal Australia has received in diving since 1924.

Mitcham first came to international attention after his sexuality was revealed in a candid interview discussing both his partner and his former retirement from diving due to depression and anxiety.

Both Mitcham and his partner Lachlan appear in DNA #105 enjoying a post-Olympics trip to Rome. The pair are due back in Australia in early October.
