Spanish eyes

Lyric Opera of Melbourne has announced its new season of never-before-seen zarzuelas in a double bill consisting of La Verbena de la Paloma and Bohemios to be held in June at Chapel off Chapel.

Zarzuelas are traditional Spanish operas dating from the 19th century that are a combination of spoken passage, song, dance and chorus, and were once very popular but fell into oblivion during the Franco period in Spain.

Showcasing some of Melbourne’s most talented young up-and-coming performers, the sassy new production will be performed in English. It runs June 3 – June 12.
