Sleaze Ball revellers be warned, illicit substances will not be tolerated, Surry Hills Police say, in keeping with a statewide crackdown on drug taking at dance parties.
Surry Hills Police have confirmed there will be a strong presence at this weekend’s Sleaze Ball, which could lead to similar arrests to those seen in Sydney’s west last weekend, when 300 pills were seized and 29 people arrested after the Transmission Dance Party at Homebush.
Surry Hills Commander Donna Adney has not specified whether dogs will be used this weekend, but assures revellers that police will be taking a hard stance on anyone caught with drugs.
“If you come into Surry Hills and you bring prohibited drugs with you — you possess them, purchase them or supply them — action will be taken against you,” Adney told Sydney Star Observer before making it clear that possession will not be treated lightly.
“If someone is detected with prohibited drugs, action will be taken against them. There is no such thing as a legal amount of prohibited drugs to have in your possession. If you have one ecstasy tablet in your possession, then that is prohibited.”
Manager of ACON’s Alcohol and Other Drugs Program, Ange Matheson, further warns, for anyone who chooses to ignore such legal pointers, that there are ways to minimise the health risks.
“People need to keep a really clear focus on health and safety for themselves and the people around them.”
Matheson encourages anyone who might be drinking or using drugs on the night to make sure they eat and rest before going, stay hydrated during the party, limit the types and quantity of drugs being taken and make plans with friends about how they are going to get to and from the party.
If there are any problems, however, Matheson says to get in touch with an ACON rover — identifiable by their neon pink vests.
“If there are problems, don’t hesitate, get a rover,” Matheson said.
She also pointed out that panicking if approached by a police officer would not help.
“The absolutely worst thing you could do is drop all your drugs at once in an effort to avoid detection, because it’s obviously going to put you at a huge risk of overdose, so think carefully about what you are doing.”
