Girl talk for women

The final touches are being put on the first ever sexual health resource produced specifically for young same-sex attracted women.
ACON will launch its Birds and the Birds booklet next year, complete with useful information and cute imagery.

“The most recent research shows that young same-sex attracted women have higher risks of STDs than both other lesbians and young heterosexual women,” ACON’s young women’s project officer Michelle Wood said.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there and misconceptions we’d like to address, like the notion that lesbians don’t need Pap smears, or the misconception that lesbians can’t get STIs at all.”

As with most Young Women’s Project initiatives, the booklet has been created based on suggestions from the community.
“Everything in the project is developed by and for young same-sex attracted women,” Wood said.

“We want it to be something that is relevant and attractive to this group and to do that we had to consult with young women.
“One of the basic things about providing sexual health information, is sex-positivity. You have to recognise that safe consensual sex is fun. It’s not all about risk and is a pleasurable activity.

“So we want to talk about that too, particularly given that we live in a homophobic society, where there aren’t that many positive representations of sex between women.”
