Anthony Lowe
John McKnight defines community as “the social place used by family, friends, neighbours, neighbourhood associations, clubs, groups and local enterprises”.
Controversy can be defined as a “dispute, argument or a debate about a matter which there is a strong disagreement especially one carried out in public or the press”.
Now our community is no stranger to controversy and it is in fact how we have managed to change the way outsiders perceive us. And controversy can be good when used for positive purposes.
Well, I am here to tell you the good news about this Australia Day weekend!
Arq kickstarts the weekend on Friday January 22 with Beyond Filth, its first leather party for 2010. With DJs Leather Boy David and Sandi Hotrod spinning the discs, hot handsome men and gals in leather, rubber, denim and fetish, it will no doubt prove to all the non-believers that real leathermen do dance.
Harbour City Bears is holding its Chunky first birthday party on Saturday January 23 at the Clarence Hotel. This a great night full of beefy blokes, furry studs, cute cubs and hot daddies.
And Saddle Bar presents Indulgence Black on Sunday January 24 starting at 3pm. What a great way to round off the weekend and still make it to work if you have to work on the Monday!
Now the not-so good-news about this Australia Day weekend.
A boycott is defined as “to join together in refusing to deal with, so as to punish or coerce”.
The fact that some members of our community are putting their energy into boycotting one of these fantastic nights not just simply puzzles me, but is in fact beyond belief.

Mr Lowe to reasons behind the boycott are well known and you chose to plead ignorance. It would appear that you support members of this community being mislead and ripped off!!!!

Anthony … like everything else in Sydney it’s fake.

You know that I know you mean well for the leather community Anthony.
However, venues who suddenly have an interest in the leather “community”… I wonder why?
A little while ago they didn’t give a toss, apart from Stuart & Andrew at Manacle (in my view).
Also, in my belief, the event at ARQ is another episode like Woof@ARQ where the illumination of passing off laws in this state is something that all community groups and promoters should be familiar with.
I personally will be boycotting this event at ARQ.

Like many others it would seem, having bought tickets to a night at Arq that was advertised in such a way as to imply it was an event linked to a very successful Melbourne based leather scene event promoter, only to find that it (in actual fact) has nothing to do with them at all, I feel somewhat cheated.
Strange that SSO finds itself unable to report on such a scam being conducted on the gay leather community in Sydney (although perhaps the advertising revenue from Arq is too important)…

Hate to say it, but we told you it was a fake.
Don’t get sucked in next time folks.
