It’s hard to believe that it’s two Olympics Games on since Sydney played host. Like World Youth Day on much better drugs, Sydney 2000 was an unbelievably exciting period when you could really feel the electricity in the air and see the happiness beaming from everybody’s faces.
I had the pleasure of living in Melbourne about two years later and choked on my gravy whenever a sports-mad inhabitant would try to downplay the significance of the Games. I sensed a dread of Sydney’s famous egomania but c’mon, if you thought Sydney 2000 “wasn’t all that” then you really need to get a life. They were all that — and more.
For me it was a truly amazing experience. I had the privilege of DJing at Nike’s sponsored-athletes party at the end of the Games, which was completely surreal. I hadn’t done much DJing before and suddenly found myself playing to the likes of Carl Lewis, Prince Albert of Monaco and the Dream Team basketballers, dropping such Sydney club classics as Love Tattoo’s Bass Has Got Me Movin’ and (shudder) South End’s The Winner is Sydney. Needless to say I should have packed more R&B.
Now the Olympics are upon us again in a very different corner of the world and the Olympic-themed parties are starting to come out thick ’n’ fast starting with the Harbour City Bears’ “Hirsute Pursuit Olympics” party at the Flinders Hotel this Friday 8 August from 9pm. Seymour Butz promises to offer a “gold medal hug and a mix CD” to the guys with the hairiest chest, face and arse, so no crack, back and sacs before that one if you want to lead your country to victory.
Then on Saturday, Civil Disobedience at the Civic Underground will feature DJs Matt Vaughan and Stephen Allkins dishing out a super-classy genre-busting mix of music of truly Olympics proportion including funk, house, disco, electro, tech and classic dance tracks. These parties have gotten packed very quickly in the past so make sure you get down there nice and early so you don’t miss out. Entry is $15 and it starts at 10pm.
Also on Saturday night, Dirty is going for gold at the Phoenix with DJs Seymour Butz, Buck Naked, Feisty and Mandy Rollins in an all-night session of dirty tribal, minimal and tech house. Entry is $15 and early attendance has also been recommended.
Then on Tuesday night, the brand new “gaymes” show night Bamboozled with Babooshka starts at the Flinders — an interactive quiz games show that’s “not quite bingo … not quite trivia”. If you love TV games shows of the ilk of Spick & Specks and Wheel of Fortune, popular culture pub trivia — or just plain old bingo — then this new weekly night is for you. There are lots of prizes on offer from Edible Blooms, Soleil, Beez Neez, Gay Matchmaker and Star Shots. It starts at 7pm and entry is just $2 so ladies, start your engines.
If you’re feeling all “bah humbug” and want to boycott the whole Beijing shebang, then rock out with your (mock) cock out at lesbian mash-up night Rock Out at the Flinders Hotel on Friday 8 August. DJs Sveta, Mandy Rollins and Eliot will be playing mashed up stuff from rock legends including AC/DC, the Rolling Stones, Nirvana, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, David Bowie, U2, the Doors and Coldplay. Entry is $10/$8 concession and it starts at 9pm.
Starfuckers at Club 77 on Saturday night features Mr Disorder, Hookie, Trentertainment and K-Von and the dress theme is “birthday suit” as it’s one of the DJs’ birthdays. Even Starfuckers are getting in on the act, with an Olympics-themed party “A Rave for the XXIX Olympiad” on Saturday 16 August. There will be drug testing all night, apparently.
