Tyran Parke would make a perfect present — he is goodlooking, gentle, sincere and sings like a beautiful music box.
The well-known musical performer is breaking away from the stage and following his passion for recording. And his travelling music wagon was recently seen parked back on home soil after completing a Eurobeat tour of South Korea. However, the stay at home is a short one because Parke is about to jet off again, this time to New York where he will endeavour to climb the international fame ladder.
The Hatpin, Angels in America and Chinks in the Armour are just are a few of the illustrious productions Parke has starred in recently. And although he has enjoyed his life as a singer-slash-actor, it is his debut album Sunday that really sets him off on a wave of excitement.
Sunday is a mixture of popular musical styles — think a little David Friedman with a sprinkling of the Doors — that started life as an EP and evolved into a full-scale, 14-track recording with the backing of The Hatpin’s orchestra.
“The challenges I faced with this album were finding new ways to invent the songs. I didn’t want people saying it was just another guy doing covers — I wanted it to be mine,” Parke told Sydney Star Observer.
“There are new arrangements and new ways to do the songs. It’s very eclectic and at the time I was wondering how I could do a CD like this and make it all fit together but we did.
“My main aim was to include all the songs I really care about. A lot of them are about creating something and leaving something behind.
“The use of an orchestra helped me find interesting new ways to do the songs. Because of this, it’s not your standard album — it’s quite obscure.”
Parke said his favourite track on the album was Pirate Jenny, which takes the theme of feminism to a whole new level.
“It’s originally done as a girl and I sang it as Tyran, but still in that female character,” Parke said.
“I find that so many songs written for guys are not that masculine, and I think that is because we are less comfortable with aggressive male characters, whereas with females we applaud it.”
Parke said once he finishes his promo tour of the United States he plans to return to Australia to launch a top secret project at Parramatta’s Riverside Theatre.
