Kafka’s Monkey is a remarkable performance and production based on Franz Kafka’s short story A Report to an Academy. In less than an hour you are taken on a wonderful, surreal journey.
Kathryn Hunter’s performance is such that the audience is able to accept and embrace the character fully and unequivocally. It is surreal in that, physically, this was merely an actor: emotionally though, this was a primate acting at being a man, a man whose fears and disappointments we could all identify with in the end.
We were the members of the Academy playing witness to this incredible transformation through the carefully crafted words of Colin Teevan and Walter Meierjohann’s thought-provoking direction. Red Peter, vaudeville star, a primate being human, exposes realities that we, as humans, might not like.
Fork out your -˜Ruddies’ (stimulus package dollars) for this. At $30 for the under-30s on weekdays, it’s far more satisfying than two watery cocktails and a dodgy root.
