Bears bask in their beauty

Bears bask in their beauty

Gentlemen, put down the wax strips and step away from the diet shakes, because the Harbour City Bears are staging a beauty pageant with a voluptuous twist.

The Bears will hold their first-ever Mr Harbour City Bear pageant on May 29. The winner will represent the club at the upcoming Mr Bear Australasia competition, held in Melbourne on June 20 as a part of the Hibernation Festival.

This is the first time the HCB has done this. For some reason Sydney’s never really had an official representative, I think because we’ve never really organised it, an excited HCB president Jonny Bastin told Sydney Star Observer.

Contestants will need to hone their skills in several key areas in order to take out the coveted title and the first prize of air tickets to Melbourne, sponsored by Flight Centre and the Flinders Hotel.

-˜Bear wear’ will replace the tragically cliched swagger of evening gowns, and contestants will be encouraged to get creative with their approach to the -˜swimsuit section’ which will simply ask candidates to provide a bit of eye candy.

As with all pageants, the proverbial guts of the competition will not only be based on the boy with the best barrel belly, but on the boy with the brainiest responses in the Q’n’A section (anyone considering entering is encouraged not to seek guidance from Miss California).

We want to learn a bit more about our contestants in this section, Bastin explained.

We’re definitely looking for someone who can represent Sydney’s bear community in Melbourne, so community involvement and awareness and what people have done in the past will of course be relevant.

There will also be a section on fantasy, because in Melbourne there’s always a section on -˜what’s your bear fantasy?’

Sitting on the discerning panel of judges will be SSO publishing editor Scott Abrahams, as well as HCB’s former president Phillip Penwright and TimeOut’s Andrew Georgiou.
