Campaign for safe and healthy Bears

Campaign for safe and healthy Bears

The first Bear community health and wellbeing campaign in New South Wales will run for the next three months, thanks to an initiative by the Harbour City Bears (HCB) with the support of ACON.

HCB vice president Marcus Pastorelli told the Star Observer the campaign would run from early December to Bear Essentials in February.

“We’re looking at four different issues — domestic violence in same-sex relationships, street safety, alcohol and other drugs, and sexual health,” Pastorelli said.

“There has never been anything that is Bear-specific across all these issues.”

The domestic violence campaign will be launched on December 2 at the Oxford Hotel at 11pm as part of the regular Furry Fridays get-together.

The sexual health campaign will also kick off in December while the street safety component will coincide with ACON’s own safety campaign in January.

Pastorelli said domestic violence was a problem in all communities.

“Domestic violence levels in the Bear community are very similar to those in other relationships, although there might be some slight changes in prevalence across groups,” he said.

Pastorelli said ACON was adding value to the campaign with its expertise in terms of knowledge and services.
