Fat Tuesday raises over $8,000

The Aurora Group marked the Bonfire of the Vanities at its fifth outing of Fat Tuesday on February 21, raising over $8,000 which Aurora will put towards their 2012 community grants.

Held at Carriageworks, the event included a feast of Italian food courtesy of johnandpetercanteen, wines courtesy of Oak Barrel and a entertainment line-up of Marney McQueen, Amy Housewine, Trevor Ashley, Tom Sharah, Michael Griffiths, Brendan Maclean and Brad Cooper.

“Fat Tuesday is traditionally a fun, indulgent and festive event where guests are treated to fabulous food in the perfect cabaret setting,” Aurora Chairperson Marcus Bourget said.

“Fat Tuesday is traditionally an indulgent feast, followed by forty days of fasting or restraint (Lent). In light of this, we encouraged all of our guests to donate $40 ($1 a day for Lent, irrespective of religious affiliations) towards our 2012 community grants, 100 percent of which goes to important community projects.

“On top of this we are particularly proud of raising over $8,000 on the evening which will go towards important projects as part of our 2012 community grants.”

The Benevolent Society, a recipient of the 2011 Aurora Small Grants scheme, was highlighted on the evening for recruiting LGBT foster carers for their program, Fostering Young Lives.

The program was featured earlier this month on the front page of The Sydney Morning Herald.

Aurora’s next fundraiser is the annual gala Aurora Dinner on June 23.

Following the success of Gay Paris at Sydney Town Hall in 2011, the planning for this year’s dinner has been underway for a couple of months.

Donations to Aurora are tax deductible and can be made online at www.givenow.com.au/auroragivingprogram
