MancerBear left hanging

Artist MancerBear (Darren Bulmer) is hoping to help people understand that gay men are not all skinny, toned, and smooth in his exhibition Arrival at TAP Gallery.

The stereotypes of gay men are often the only thing we see in popular media, so it takes artists like myself who are willing to break the chains of what conforms to the approved perspective and show that things are not always as they seem, he said.

While largely using a pen or ink, many of the pieces are drawn from his experiences as a bisexual man as he grows and develops as an artist.

I personally see my work as a number of different things -” art, stroke material, self-expression, illustration, and storytelling.  The only think I ask from my viewers is that they enjoy themselves, MancerBear said.

A lot of people also ask me why I draw such big cocks on my men. That’s not really an easy question to answer, but I think it boils down to the fact that men, in our society at least, are often judged by the size of their penis.

I want to show that the men that I draw are men in a hyper-masculine kind of way, which pokes fun at the cock as a yardstick.

info: Arrival opens this Monday 23 February at TAP Gallery and will continue until Sunday 1 March. For more details go to www.mancerbear.com
