Rees Government honours volunteers support

NSW Youth and Volunteering Minister Graham West has extended a $5000 grant to Twenty10 and the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service following National Volunteers Week.

West and MLC Penny Sharpe were introduced to some of the volunteers who support the young people of Twenty10 and staff the GLCS’s counselling line, during a tour on Friday.

The two organisations rely on the generosity of more than 120 volunteers to provide vital services and hospitality to community members in need, particularly youth, the disadvantaged and people from rural areas. A Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was also held to celebrate their contribution and to reward long-time volunteers.

I would like to thank the volunteers at both Twenty10 and the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service for offering their time and energy to help others, West said.

Sharpe said the volunteers do a great job assisting young queer people and answering more than 1000 calls each year, increasingly from regional NSW where there are fewer services for GLBT people.
