Lovers of gay and lesbian radio are being reminded to renew their JOY94.9 memberships.

The Melbourne GLBTI radio station is currently running its annual radiothon and JOY president David McCarthy called on members, old and new, to contact the station to show their support.

“As JOY approaches its 18th birthday, all our members can feel proud of what we have achieved,” McCarthy said.

“We are a vibrant, connected and engaged community radio station that delivers 24/7 on our mission.

“To do this, we need members and this radiothon, we need you more than ever.”

The theme of this year’s radiothon is ‘I love JOY’ and already the social media sphere is awash with user pics displaying the slogan.

The 24-hour station is Australia’s only gay and lesbian volunteer community radio station. It operates thanks to more than 250 volunteers.

The station — broadcasting since 1993 — does not receive any ongoing funding and is reliant on financial memberships to stay on air.

The radiothon ends this Friday, June 10.
