Southern comfort

August is a busy month in the Illawarra, with some large group events and plenty of activities to check out if you’re in the area.

Here’s another reminder that ACON Illawarra will be having a community barbecue and rainbow party on Saturday 23 August. The barbecue will start at noon at the ACON Illawarra Community Space (18 Ellen St, Wollongong) and will be followed by the rainbow party at 2pm. What is a rainbow party? Think of a similar concept to a Tupperware party, but instead you’re looking at rainbow and pride gear.

You don’t have to buy anything, you might like to just come and browse, but either way come along to the barbecue and catch up with other members of your local community. Phone Michael at ACON Illawarra on 4226 1163 for more information and to RSVP for catering purposes.

Following ACON’s rainbow party, from 25 to 30 August the Allsorts Queer Collective from the University of Wollongong will hold its annual Sexuality Week activities. The theme for this year is Pride and they have packed the week out with a host of great activities and workshops.

While there are activities planned for every day and most evenings throughout the week, some of the events running during Sexuality Week this year will include:

On Tuesday, guest speaker and former Sydney Star Observer editor Marcus O’Donnell will be presenting on the issue of The Role of Gay Media. Wednesday will see the return of the annual Allsorts Fair Day on the Duck Pond Lawn, with performances, a barbecue, stalls from community organisations and activities (you might even catch me running around in a giant condom suit).

Friday will round off the week with the ever-popular Homo De Nile end of Sexuality Week party. The theme this year is Moustache and it will be kicking off from around 6pm at Music Farmers which can be found at 5 Crown Lane, Wollongong.

Most events will be completely free of charge, though some may request a gold coin donation to help cover costs. For more details on other planned events and workshops call Jess on 0419 614 653.

If you require any additional information about groups, services or organisations in the Illawarra you can contact ACON Illawarra on 4226 1163.

Trevor Slattery is the Education and Community Development Officer for ACON’s Illawarra Branch.
