Southern comfort

Monday 24 November will be a great day to get up, rub your eyes, and head down to ACON in Wollongong. Why? Because to kick off AIDS Awareness Week we will be throwing the doors open even wider than usual for our open day and morning tea.

Drop in, have a chat, ask about our work this year and give us ideas on where we might be able to have even more local impact in the future. If you’re brave enough, you might want to try a freshly made scone as we give the Community Space a bit of Devonshire tea action.

Later that evening, starting at 5pm, we will be having a community BBQ before our AIDS memorial service. This will be followed by a movie screening so people can stay a while, catch up, relax and wind down after such a huge day.

On Friday 28 November and Monday 1 December, we will be selling red ribbons at our stall in Crown Street Mall. Please come up and say hello, donate, and help to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS within the Wollongong community. Volunteers are needed, so those who have some time to spare please call Michael on 4226 1163 to register your interest.

The third UNITY Dance for the year will be held on Saturday 29 November at Beaton Park Tennis Club from 8pm to 1am. The theme for this dance is RED, in keeping with AIDS Awareness Week. Entry is $10 or $5 for members.

Please join in these activities during AIDS Awareness Week and on World AIDS Day. It is a time when every little bit of help can make a huge difference in the life of our community.
One more thing: On Wednesday 10 December starting at 7.30pm the SESIAHS HIV/AIDS & Related Programs Unit is hosting a screening of the film A Closer Walk at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.

info: If you require any additional information about these events, services, organisations or groups in the Illawarra contact ACON on 4226 1163 or email [email protected]

Trevor Slattery is the Education and Community Development Officer for ACON’s Illawarra Branch.
