Super with your sponge cake this Mother’s Day

Mother’s Day this year may come imbued with a new sense of optimism for lesbian mums as they celebrate the suite of new rights granted at the end of last year.

For many, however, there is still confusion which the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby hopes to clear up at a special picnic on Saturday May 2.

Every year the Lobby holds a Mother’s Day event for rainbow families, but this year’s picnic is an opportunity to explain exactly what the recent legal reforms mean for gay and lesbian parents.

We’re holding the picnic mostly as an education campaign to talk to mothers about the new laws at a federal level, GLRL convenor Emily Gray explained.

We want lesbian parents to know about the new changes to family laws as well as changes to areas like social security laws and things around superannuation.

It’s all part of our broader education campaign to target particular groups of people we think will be a bit more affected, rather than trying to reach everyone at once.

Other upcoming information events include a beer and tax night and specific sessions for lawyers and human resources professionals.
