ON a sunny afternoon in February 2009, 45,000 people marched down Fitzroy St in Melbourne’s St Kilda neighbourhood to mark the 14th annual Pride March.

The parade was led by Dykes on Bikes, and the then-Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon led the police, one of her last public outings before she left her post.

“This is a wonderful occasion,” she told enthusiastic crowds after the march.

“Unquestionably you’ve been there and you’ve supported me and it’s a great pleasure to be part of this wonderful community.”

It was Nixon’s second appearance at the march, after she controversially led the Victoria Police contingent back in 2002.
