Angels fly to Melbourne

Angels in America, winner of four Tony Awards and a Pulitzer, arrives at Melbourne’s Chapel Off Chapel Theatre from next week.

The Victorian AIDS Council/Gay Mens Health Centre has thrown its support behind the play which is being presented by local outfit, 3 Big Men Productions.

The play was first performed in 1991 in San Francisco, the same year Queen lead singer Freddie Mercury died and HIV testing peaked in the UK.

Set in New York in 1985, the play follows the first years of reports about HIV/AIDS, believed to be a specifically gay men’s disease.

It follows five characters: a corrupt lawyer and closeted gay man, a Mormon couple who struggle with suppressed homosexuality and drug addiction, and a homosexual couple.

Angels in America Part 1 – Millennium Approaches opens on Friday 17 August and runs until Sunday 2 September.
