Adding some spark to marriage equality

Adding some spark to marriage equality

A new web series starring Brendan Maclean as a B-grade wedding planner who dedicates his life to giving his oddball clients the perfect day, Sparks is a comedy with a deeper underlying message about marriage equality.

Despite Gerald Spark’s (Brendan Maclean) love of weddings, it is not a joy that he’s allowed to experience with his partner Dave (Anthony Gooley) because they are a same-sex couple.

The series also stars well known queer comedian Tom Ballard as Adam, a hapless young man swept up in a bad relationship with Siobhan (Veronica Milsom).

“Love is love. That’s all there is to it. Doesn’t matter if you’re gay or straight or whatever, there shouldn’t be two tiers of spending the rest of your life with someone,” said Kyran Wheatley, who co-created the series with Warren Clarke.

“There are a lot of independent projects out there but Sparks was the first one that felt like it had a purpose,” said Maclean, a singer-songwriter and radio announcer and soon to reach a much wider audience thanks to a role in The Great Gatsby.

“It’s powerful but not too preachy; hilarious but with heart.”
