Love and other catastrophes

He’s a National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA) gradudate, theatre performer and one-time political hopeful, now Dinesh Mathew is adding comedian to his bag of tricks.

This month Mathew will star in Midsumma Festival comical cabaret show Love and other Psychological Disorders and Afflictions looking at the dilemmas of love and life.

The show follows a young man in love with the concept of old fashioned romance, which Mathew explains cheekily, in today’s world may be considered stalking.

“Love is not as easy as you find in the movies anymore,” Mathew said.

“Sending flowers, letters, following someone home are no longer considered romantic, so songs like ‘On the Street where you Live,’ have a totally new meaning.”

Taking inspiration from all over the place, the show will feature ‘80s pop hits and country and western songs and is based on a friend’s real experiences finding love.

“I’ve taken this person’s experiences and given them a new life, so I hope they don’t come to see the show, that could be slightly awkward,” he said.

Mathew stood for the Greens in the Victorian seat of Prahran at the 2006 election.

Love and other Psychological Disorders and Afflictions
runs from January 19 – 25 at Downstairs at Alma’s, North Caulfield.
