MICF Review: Joel Creasey in Rock God

ENTERING the packed top floor of the Swiss Club on Flinders Lane, you get a sense of the buzz surrounding the main act.

2013 was something of a breakout year for Joel Creasey, as his television career began to take off. Sold-out performances early in the Melbourne International Comedy Festival would suggest that audiences agree.

In just under an hour, Creasey’s storytelling ranges from homophobic run-ins on Twitter, to dick pics, to the perils – and triumphs – of being dragged to Zumba classes by your mother.

This is Creasey’s best show to date. The young comic seems to have found his rhythm, with a much more confident and driving pace, while the intelligent material makes this a thoughtful, well-put-together set.

The jokes are on-the-ball, and it rarely – if ever – lags. While his punchlines aren’t the best of the 2014 festival, he is by far one of the festival’s most entertaining performers, with great banter for the whole hour.

Indeed, zingers aren’t really his style – his talent is in charming audiences with witty, hugely entertaining stories.

Let the guy host the bloody Logies already.
