IN a collaboration with Twenty10, Google Australia has released “Australia’s biggest love song” to celebrate this year’s Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

The song was created using lyric contributions from more than 1000 Australians in support of equal love and to raise awareness on homophobia and transphobia.

Toby Martin, former lead singer of Youth Group, volunteered to select his favourite lyrics and assemble it into a song, which he performed on the main stage at Mardi Gras Fair Day recently.

“Despite the advances we’ve made in recent years, homophobia and anxiety around sexual identity is still an issue,” said Martin, whose former band is best famous for their hit cover of Forever Young.

“This project seemed like a great way to channel some positive thoughts and to let people know they are not alone.”

Guy Sebastian, Megan Washington, Magda Szubanski and The Jezabels all contributed lyrics along the theme of “what is love?” to create the final song (If it Ain’t for Everyone) It Ain’t Love.

Google spokesperson Andrew Ure said that as the local community came on board, the project became bigger than expected.

“We wanted to see just how much could be achieved when Aussies collaborated for a good cause – and we were blown away by the results,” he said.

“The lyrics that everyone contributed sent a powerful message that love is stronger than hate.”

The single aims to raise money for Twenty10, a non-for-profit that helps LGBT youth with emergency housing and support.

Twenty10 executive director Brett Paradise said it was “uplifting” seeing the community support and collaboration to create something special.

“Our community has always found celebration and comfort in song… There’s no better way for us to express our support for young LGBTI Aussies,” he said.

“Almost two thirds of LGBTI Australians have experienced homophobic or transphobic harassment or violence – but this song reminds us that the voice of equality will never be outsung.”

The song is available for free download at the Google Play store, and Google will contribute $1 per download to Twenty10, up to $50,000.

  1. “but this song reminds us that the voice of equality will never be outsung.”
what utter and immature humbug…”it”‘s not all about you even though that’s your relentless message.

Objectors to your trying to crush a longstanding social agreement on marriage doesn’t mean others hate you, even though you try hard enough to provoke them to be seen that way . As for your ‘love’…ohh… please!!… give us a break.

“helps LGBT youth with emergency housing and support”…good thinking however your enthusiasm for ‘young gays’ to ‘come out’ I find quite disturbing and on recent exposure of networks of homosexual predators sounding very predatory.

  2. You can’t claim LGBT coverage while only focussing on homophobia and transphobia and completely ignoring biphobia.

Also, the headline for this article is shocking. Gay is not an umbrella term for LGBT – please stop erasing bisexual and trans* identified youth and adults.
