SBS to broadcast a fortnight of LGBTI content for Mardi Gras season

AS part of Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras celebrations SBS will broadcast a line up of LGBTI-themed content on SBS One, SBS 2, SBS Radio, SBS Online and its subscription channel World Movies.

The content includes comedy and drama series, documentaries, queer films, and a collection of feature reports and stories and will be broadcast in the lead up to, and after the Mardi Gras Parade highlights show hosted by Magda Szubanski, Tom Ballard and Patrick Abboud on Sunday, March 8 from 8.30pm on SBS One.

Among these are new queer series Cucumber, Banana and Tofu, created by UK writer/director Russell T Davies (Queer as Folk), all of which aim to explore 21st century gay life.

Premiering on March 9 on SBS One, Cucumber follows a 46-year-old man named Henry and his boyfriend Lance in the aftermath of “the worst date night in history”. Its sister series Banana is an insight to the lives of the younger characters that will premier on March 13.

Meanwhile, Tofu  an eight-part factual web series fronted by YouTube star Benjamin Cook that aims to explore modern sex through interviews with people detailing their experiences.

In addition to the three series listed above, The Out List — will also be broadcast on March 5 on SBS 2.

Another highlight of SBS’ Mardi Gras-focused week is The Case Against 8, the award-winning documentary about the events that led up to, and the aftermath of, the Supreme Court case which overturned California’s ban on same-sex marriage. It will air on March 7 on SBS One.

SBS’ news and current affairs programs, in particular Dateline, The Feed and NITV News, will also broadcast stories from the LGBTI community, including interviews with Tony Abbott’s openly-gay sister Christine Forster, Magda Szubanski, what it’s like to be trans* in Indonesia and some Indigenous LGBTI stories.

There will also be queer movie marathon nights on World Movies and SBS 2 on March 1 and 2 respectively, while SBS Radio will team up with Melbourne-based JOY 94.9 to broadcast live from the Mardi Gras Parade on March 7.
