Another splash in the pool

20140106111909318272aTHERE must be something in the water, or at least the diving board, because according to outsports.com, Brazlian fiver Ian Matos has decided to come out gay publicly after drawing inspiration from British diver Tom Daley.

In an interview with Rio de Janiero newspaper Correio, 24-year-old Matos said:

“From a young age, I knew I was gay”.

Advised by a friend to stay closeted until after the Rio 2016 Olympics, Matos spoke of how LGBTI where often discriminated in sport.

“It seems that, for being a homosexual, you already get a level below. I heard a lot ‘I will not lose to a pussy’ or ‘do not believe you lost to fagot’,” he said.

However, Matos found the pressure of hiding boyfriends, avoiding gay parties and not being himself proved too much.

He said he hoped that coming out would not impact his ability to be a successful diver.
