From the diving board to the ukulele

matthew mitcham

Matthew Mitcham is known to most as an Olympic medal winner, but lately Mitcham is sharing a hidden talent of his on line in the form of musical covers that he is filming at home with his ukulele.

His latest, a shirtless (swoons) cover of the late Amy Winehouse’s ‘Cherry’, with a few lyrical changes, and turned it into a dedication to his ‘fur baby’ Louis.

Star Observer spoke with Mitcham to find out more about these covers that seem to be popping up online, and we asked him why he decided to do a cover dedication to his beloved dog.

“I just love Amy’s music, particularly her record Frank. This little gem is a song called Cherry, and it was pretty easy to change a couple of words to make it a love song for my puppy.”

Impressed by his singing abilities, we asked if we would see more ukelele covers.

“Absolutely! I’m going to try to do one every fortnight, and I’m open to suggestions if people want to make them in the comments sections to my other videos or on my Twitter @matthew_mitcham”. Mitcham also told us that he is looking at doing a collaborative series of videos, so any musos interested in participating should contact him via Twitter too.

We look forward to seeing some of these covers, and commend Mitcham on this massive task, because on top of these musical covers Mitcham is busy training for the Glasgow 2014 Commonweath Games whilst finishing a Cert IV in fitness, whilst at the same time “exploring career options in the entertainment industry. I’m thinking TV or radio, but I’m not ruling out anything, which is why I’m doing these YouTube videos, cabaret shows at Slide (Sydney), and even considering other stage shows. I just want to entertain people!”.
