Condom castle gives new meaning to “play safe”
Young HIV/AIDS advocates are behind a condom-shaped jumping castle to be erected in Federation Square on Friday morning ahead of World AIDS Day.
Youth Empowerment Against HIV/AIDS (YEAH) volunteers will be speaking with Melburnians about sexual health and encouraging them to take part in a World AIDS Day photo campaign.
The city will play host to the International AIDS Conference in 2014 and YEAH CEO Alischa Ross said its young people would also play a crucial role in the conference.
“In the lead up to the conference it is important that we recognise and support the role of young people in our local communities taking real action and being proactive in sustaining HIV and sexual health education,” she said.
“Young people are going to be more informed and ultimately safer if we make sure that their mates are passing on the right information and not perpetuating myths because they haven’t had an opportunity to speak candidly with someone they trust and who knows about sexual health.”
YEAH is the only youth-driven HIV and sexual health organisation in Australia.
It will have volunteers on the ground on Friday in Queensland, South Australia and the Northern Territory.
The jumping castle and volunteers will be at the Swanston Street Forecourt, Federation Square from 7-9am.
