Alan Cumming suggests way to abstain from gay sex in order to donate blood in comic video

OPENLY-gay actor Alan Cumming has teamed up with US-based LGBTI activist group GLAAD in an amusing video criticising a proposed change to an American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) policy banning gay men to donate blood that was originally introduced in the country in 1983 during the HIV and AIDs epidemic.

The FDA’s proposed change is to allow men and trans women who have sex with men and donate blood – but they can only donate blood if they abstain from sex for a full year.

“That’s right, 365 days of celibacy,” Cumming says in the video, before further suggesting some “fully approved” ways to abstain from sex through activities such as pottery classes, cleaning the house, exercising, yoga, and popping cork bottles to take your mind of sex so they can help save lives by donating blood.

A petition run by GLAAD on the celibacychallenge.com website also puts pressure on the FDA to lift the lifetime ban — and drop the proposed one-year ban — and rather screen all prospective blood donors based on risk, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
