Killer Love – Nicole Scherzinger
After a number of aborted attempts (see her overlooked 2007 debut single Whatever You Like), Nicole Scherzinger has finally broken away from the Pussycat Dolls with a (semi) successful debut album of her own.
Like the Dolls’ two efforts, it’s an enjoyable collection of pop, but one that offers little in the way of originality.
Scherzinger’s wisely aligned herself with producer of the moment RedOne, who’s at the helm of many of the best tracks here — ace album opener Poison included. Many of the tracks are craven rip-offs of hits by other artists (Rihanna in particular, whose What’s My Name and Only Girl in the World are respectively plagiarised for Right There and Wet) but that matters little when the source material was so strong to begin with.
Unfortunately, at 14 tracks, Killer Love outstays its welcome by at least four songs, with the whole thing descending into a sugary morass of ballads by the end. Best to cherrypick the addictive singles and leave the rest.
