Ethan Hawke believes there’s “almost zero homophobia” among today’s youth

ETHAN Hawke has reportedly told Canadian media that children today “have almost zero homophobia”.

The actor, 43, was speaking to the Toronto Star this week, reflecting on his career and the changes he has seen in the past few decades, especially in terms of homophobia and the frequent portrayals of homosexuality in mainstream media since the character of Plato in Rebel Without a Cause.

“One of the biggest differences I think between my generation and my kids is that they have almost zero homophobia,” the Toronto Star quoted Hawke.

 “It’s been fascinating to me.

“They’ve grown up thinking that it’s not a big deal to have gay characters on TV or in movies.

“There are all these things that started this ball rolling, and now people are really comfortable talking about it. I think you’ll see a lot less teen suicide in the coming years. I really do believe that.”

Hawke also added how movies today did not have to hide homosexuality, a stark comparison to what was done in James Dean’s classic film.

“It doesn’t have to be all tucked away in innuendo any more,” Hawke said.

  1. No I don’t agree with this at all. In Australia homophobia is well and truly still alive. The very fact that the word gay is now used by the young as a derogatory term is proof of it despite what they say about it not being homophobic. Sure they all claim to be accepting of gay people and their gay mates and it’s not socially acceptable to be a gay hating redneck but to be perceived as gay is the worst thing that could happen to a 12-25 year old guy. It’s a permanent stamp amongst their peers and means social execution. Homophobia may not be what it used to be but it’s still there, it’s just taken on a new form just lie, racism.
