Leto wins Oscar for HIV Positive trans* role

JARED Leto has taken home the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor at the 86th Academy Awards for his role at Rayon, a HIV-positive trans* woman in Dallas Buyers Club.

“This is for the 36 million people out there who have lost the battle to AIDS,” Leto said in his acceptance speech.

“To those of you who have felt injustice because of who you are and who you love, I stand here in front of the world with you and for you.”

Dallas Buyers Club is based on the true story of homophobic drug addict Ron Woodroof, played by Matthew McConaughey, who smuggles much-needed but unapproved medication into the USA to give to other AIDS patients.

The film earned six Oscar nominations including Best Actor for McConaughey, which he won, and Best Picture.
