Miley Cyrus launches charity to help vulnerable gay youth

MILEY Cyrus may not be a stranger to provocative public statements, but she is now making headlines for the right reasons after launching a charity to help homeless and LGBT youth.

The charity, the Happy Hippie Foundation, was launched May 5 with a music clip staring Cyrus singing alongside Joan Jet, encouraging people to donate while promising more special music collaborations.

Cyrus said the Happy Hippie Foundation is dedicated to fighting the injustices faced by homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.

“The position I’m in, I feel like I’ve got a lot of power… but so many kids don’t feel that way. They’re under their parents’ rule,” she told the Associated Press.

No stranger to helping raise awareness on homelessness, Cyrus had a homeless man accept her award for Video of the Year and the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

On the topic of homelessness, she that “It’s something that everyone sees… It’s like the birds chirping. We’re consciously ignoring it at all times, but it’s always happening right in front of us”.

She also said she hopes to improve the lives of homeless LGBTI kids by creating digital support groups with the money raised.

“It’s not going to be an overnight process,” she said.

“You’ve got to get into a lot of people’s brains and you’ve got to really make this a topic.”
