Do you have a sore vagina?

Sexual health researchers at the University of Sydney are looking for women between the ages of 18 and 55 who experience genital pain or discomfort during sexual and/or non-sexual activities.

Scientists believe this a relevant topic for women with a recent survey showing a third of women experience pain during sex.

“This can be due to a number of reasons such as not being fully aroused, not producing enough lubricant to make intercourse comfortable, or due to chronic conditions such as endometriosis, vaginismus and vulvodynia,” sex therapist and co-investigator Kathy Bond said.

The study aims to explain the obstacles women face getting a diagnosis and suitable treatment for sexual health related issues.

“Sexual health is very much linked to emotional health and well-being and it is important that we are doing all that we can to ensure that women are aware of these conditions and confident in seeking appropriate treatment,” Dr Patricia Weerakoon, Coordinator of Sexual Health studies at the University of Sydney’s Faculty of Health Sciences, said.
