A gay shotgun union?

Now that eligible NSW couples of the same sex can apply to register their relationship with the Relationship Register NSW, a State Government-sponsored initiative, some businesses are getting in on the act by making it quicker and easier for same-sex couples to do so.

Julie Sweet of Certificates Online, an online business which offers fast, official certified copies of Birth, Marriage, Family and Death Certificates or Change of Name Documents, has announced that the business is now expanding to include a new high-speed service for eligible couples wishing to register their relationship.

Assuming that the same-sex couple is eligible – neither is married or already in a registered relationship, and they are not related by family – Sweet’s service can fast-track their application to be put on the register.

“This at least gives gays and lesbians an opportunity to not be treated as second class citizens and have equality, like other couples have in relationships – its a good start,” Sweet said of the recent formation of the Relationship Register NSW.

“Now its just a simple matter in NSW and some other states, to complete an application form to register a relationship by consent, together with a Statutory Declaration and authorised ID.”
