Go Bear not bare

Go Bear not bare

Go Bear not bare is the message the Harbour City Bears are putting out there in their new safe-sex campaign.

Produced in conjunction with ACON and Pantheon Films, the message goes back to basics by reminding Bears and cubs to always use condoms and water-based lube.

“When we were planning Bear Essentials 15, one of our events seemed a good opportunity for us to promote safer sex to the community. It’s a Play Party and it’s gonna be sexy and a lot of fun, but it wouldn’t be one of our parties if we didn’t also look after our patrons,” HCB Committee member Marcus said.

Bears, cubs and their admirers represent a large portion of the GLBT community and as the largest community organisation who represents them the Harbour City Bears believe they have clear responsibilities that include initiatives such as promoting safer sex.

“We want our members and guests to enjoy themselves but do it responsibly and with care for one another,” Marcus said.

“We want our members and guests to enjoy themselves but do it responsibly. It’s not rocket science, sex is great but putting your health at risk, or that of someone else, isn’t sexy because you’re not respecting yourself or your sexual partners.”

Harbour City Bears’ safer-sex cards are currently being distributed in ACON play packs and given out at HCB’s regular Furry Fridays nights at the Oxford Hotel.

  1. Hey Mr Avenger – the bears would love to take you up on that offer of a beer. This Furry Friday at the Oxford suits us…ok with you?

  2. @BwC @Stevi saying fuck off isn’t inclusive is it? You should really say why not join us for a beer and a fuck and talk about our differences. ;)

  3. @Salty I accept individuals whether they are an ectomorph, endomorph or mesomorph or any combination of the latter.

What I don’t accept is the self abuse of people mistreating their bodies whether through excessive consumption of food, alcohol, drugs etc…, deprivation of food, or physically distorting bodies to unrealistically exaggerate proportions.

Yes people have the right to decide how they want their body and I grew up around feminists so I understand body politics very well. Yet there is a line where people cross and where body modification (whether people are aware of it or not) becomes self abuse. And this is when society is morally obliged to intervene to protect the individual (taking into consideration our society frowns upon extreme self harm and suicide; if we allowed it we could permit the individual to take body modification to the extreme).

Also the western world is experiencing what you could say a ‘obesity crisis’ which is impacting on our society through the need for more medical intervention to cure health problems stemming from obesity, the environmental impact of more consumption of resources and the social impact of of mental health and wellness in general. Considering this obesity for the purpose of fetishisation is selfish.

In your comment regarding acceptance and non-judgemental attitude towards bears, I would like to add I have known a lot of bears and socialised in the bear scene over many years and from what I have seen first hand is that many bears have very poor self esteem and self acceptance and exhibit the exact discrimination and judgement towards non-bears you have accused me of. From my perspective bear culture verges on being a cult and I’m not surprised it’s thriving considering it’s practically effortless to be a bear and the deceptiveness of believing the too good to be true ethos of bears all inclusivity makes it appealling to troubled souls.

  4. @mravenger – it’s also unhealthy to discriminate based on body size – many people believe the gay “lifestyle” is a poor unhealthy choice – the sort of discrimination you exhibit is exactly why we have a bear community – a triving one at that – it us possible to be big, beautiful & healthy – please try & be more tolerant of your gay brothers & sisters – s.

  5. What BwC said. Especially the fuck off part.
The pic for this campaign is seriously sexy! Well done guys!! WOOF!

  6. They do. Strategic partnership with Lifestyle fitness, including regular info the HCB weekly newsletter.

    So fuck off.

  7. It would be beneficial is the bears also promoted healthy living as part of their health promotion campaigns. Obesity is a epidemic in our society and the bears promote unhealthy standards of living. Their fetishisation of bulky and overweight men is the same as the glamorisation of ultra thin models. Both are results of eating disorders and poor lifestyle choices!
