Gum disease on the rise

Gum disease in gay men is increasing at high rates. Studies have also revealed that gum disease is sometimes more common in HIV patients due to the patients’ general health and immune systems being compromised.

Dr Michael Finkelstein from the Finkelstein Dental Centre said that periodontal disease is prevalent throughout Australia, particularly amongst those people who lead a busy life and neglect their teeth.

We are finding there is an increase in periodontal (gum) disease and dental caries (decay) due to our modern diet which includes excess sugar in food and particularly in some cold drinks, alcoholic mixes and so-called energy drinks. Smoking also is a factor, Finkelstein said.

Vincent’s infection is also increasing. This is a very infectious and destructive condition that destroys the gum and bones around the teeth and can be passed from person to person, or spread by sharing toothbrushes. This condition is easily treated nowadays by medication prescribed by your dentist.

Gay men are urged to have regular six-monthly dental check-ups with teeth and gums professionally cleaned by a dental hygienist at least two or three times a year. Bleeding gums, bad breath, loss of gum attachment around the teeth, and possible tender sore gums can be some common signs and symptoms of gum disease.

Unhealthy gums can be extremely painful and can lead to loosening and therefore loss of teeth, Finkelstein said.

People who are diagnosed by us with gum disease, and who are cared for under our preventative program get wonderful results as they are not plagued with rotting gums, bone disease and loss of teeth and bad breath.
