America’s first gay male prom queen crowned

THE state of Connecticut in the US has made history by crowning the country’s first gay male prom queen.

Gay teen Nasir Fleming posted a video of his win on YouTube, describing the high school prom queen win.

“Even though I identify as male, winning this title is a statement against transphobia. As gay people, more or less, are becoming accepted in society, transgendered people are still discriminated against severely,” he said.

“If I can win a title that is outside of my gender, there is no reason why a trans-person should have any problems winning titles in his/her gender (Prom Queen, Miss America, etc). Stop the hate, start the love.”

The student, who was crowned to a cheering crowd, also reflected on the moment to Queerty.

“My main reason for wanting to win prom queen is to show the school, and hopefully the world, that if a spunky, odd gay kid can win prom queen, then anyone can,” he said.

“This message is mainly for transgendered people, because they seem to face so much backlash for simply being themselves. If I can win a title that is out of my gender, anyone else should be able to, including transgendered people.

“I also want other LGBT youth that our main purpose in life is to make ourselves happy. Very often we conform to societal norms in order to be accepted, and it is not acceptable for us to shun a perfectly fine part of ourselves. We are the innovators of the future, we are the future and we can make a change.”

This is a good moment for the LGBTI community.
